In 1590 the letters "CROATOAN" were found carved on a tree on Roanoke island. The colonists that had lived there were gone and it was assumed that they had moved on to Croatoan Island, 50 miles away, but they were not there either; they had vanished. Fifty years later, grey-eyed, English speaking Indians where discovered not far away...
